Bach Biography
Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Eisenach, Germany on
March 21, 1685. Bach received his earliest musical training
from his father, who taught him violin and music theory.
His father died when he was 10, and Bach Went to live with
an older brother, Johann Christoph, an organist who taught
him keyboard. At 15, JS Bach spent two years at the choir
school of St. Michael's Church in Lüneburg, and performed
in the choir. Bach Went on to hold a number court organist
positions, and became know as a virtuoso on the instrument.
In 1708, JS Bach was appointed organist and chamber musician
to the Duke of Saxe-Weimar, and in the next nine years he
composed many of his finest works for the instrument. Bach
married a year before and during these years he fathered
seven children, including Wilhelm Friedemann and Carl Philipp
Emanuel.
In 1717, JS Bach was appointed Kapellmeister at Cöthen. Bach had no organ duties in this position and focused on instrumental composition. It was that here he wrote the violin concertos, the six Brandenburg Concertos, and many sonatas, suites and keyboard works. His wife died in 1720, and he remarried a year later. In 1723 Bach was appointed Cantor at Leipzig's St. Thomas' School and music director of St. Thomas' and St. Nicholas' Schools. He remained there for the rest of his life, composing for the constantly liturgy and feast days, and his compositions included five cantata cycles, the Magnificat, the St. John and St. Matthew Passions. Bach also had 13 more children with his second wife, including Johann Christian, in 1735.
JS Bach's eyesight began to deteriorate during 1750 and he was operated on twice by an occultist. He died on July 22, 1750. At the time of his death, Bach's musical style had become unfashionable and most of his works forgotten. Years later, with the help of a performance of the St. Matthew Passion conducted by Mendelssohn in Berlin in 1829, interest in JS Bach surged and his reputation grew to what it is today.
