Elmore James Biography

Elmore James was the most influential slide guitarist in the second half of the 20th century. His signature lick came from an electric updating of Robert Johnson's "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom." James originally was a radio repairman and he tWeaked his amplifiers to produce raw, distorted sounds that would become the dominant rock sound in the late 1960s. James was born January 27, 1918 in Richland, Mississippi. In the 1930s he backed traveling players coming through town including Robert Johnson, Howlin' Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson. James befriended Williamson and accompanied him for some years. James spent three years stationed in Guam during World War II. He signed his first recording contract with Trumpet Records in 1951. James' debut release, "Dust My Broom," based on a tune by Robert Johnson, became his best known. It was a surprise RandB hit reaching the Top Ten. James also recorded for Flair and Meteor. He moved to Chicago and formed The Broomdusters. Recordings Were released on Chief, Chess, Vee-Jay, Fire, and other labels. His "Bleeding Heart" and "Shake Your Moneymaker" Were later recorded by Jimi Hendrix and Fleetwood Mac. James recording career only lasted tWelve years. He died of a heart attack on May 24, 1963.
