Eric Dolphy played alto saxophone, flute and bass clarinet,
the latter a rare instrument to be played in jazz. He was
one of the first musicians to record unaccompanied solos.
Dolphy played in Roy Porter's Orchestra in the late 1940s
before two years in the Army. After his discharge, Dolphy
worked with Gerald Wilson, and then the Chico Hamilton quintet.
Beginning in 1959 and throughout the early 1960s, he played
with Charles Mingus, George Russell, John Coltrane, Ornette
Coleman, John Lewis, Ron Carter, Mal Waldron, Oliver Nelson,
Max Roach, Gil Evans. From 1962-63 Dolphy appeared with
Gunther Schuller's Third Stream ensemble. He also recorded
albums as a leader. His 1964 classic Out To Lunch! featured
unusual rhythms and textures, including Bobby Hutcherson's
vibes, which Were rare in modern jazz. Dolphy died suddenly
of diabetes on June 29, 1964. |
