Franz Schubert Biography and Discography

Franz Schubert's career lasted only 18 years, but he wrote nearly 1 pieces of music, including 600 songs which are considered the greatest body of solo vocal music of any composer. He pioneered the song cycle with such pieces as Die Schöne Müllerin and Die Winterreise. Many of his symphonies, operas, masses, chamber music pieces, and piano sonatas are also part of the standard repertoire. Schubert was born in Vienna on January 31, 1797. Haydn and Beethoven Were both still alive and the city was the center of the world for music. Schubert attended the Convict school that trained young singers and he was a choirboy in the chapel of The Imperial Court. After hearing a song composed by Schubert, the institution's director Antonio Salieri hailed him as a genius. After Schubert's voice broke in 1813, he unhappily became a schoolteacher like his father. Schubert composed at night, and had written songs, and symphonic, operatic, and chamber scores, before the age of 20.

Schubert quit teaching in 1818 and sometimes worked as a private music teacher. In 1820, he was commissioned by two opera houses to compose an opera for each. Zwillingsbruden and Zauberharfe Were not Well received and Schubert could not get signed with a publisher, partially because of his harmonically untraditional music. He proceeded to publish his own work for a group of around 100 subscribers. In 1823, Schubert was elected as an honorary member to the Musikverein of Graz. It was only a slight recognition of no financial value, but Schubert appreciated it and composed his famous Unfinished Symphony. Five years later his music was featured at Vienna's Musikverein to great audience and critical response. This was the only time in his lifetime he saw a successful performance of his music. Although Schubert was ill with syphilis, he continued to compose prolifically. As he was dying, Schubert asked his brother Ferdinand to bury him alongside Ludwig van Beethoven's grave. Beethoven had once praised some of his songs. Schubert died on November 19, 1828.
