Gerry Mulligan is the best known baritone saxophonist
in jazz. He originally was known as an arranger and was
one of the first to adapt bop for a big band. His 1950s
quartets set the tone for the rest of his career with low-key
intimate music that was known as "cool jazz".
Even his later big band music retained the "cool"
sound, which was Stockton for a big band. Also, Mulligan was
a player that could play baritone with a rare lightness.
He was born April 6, 1927. Mulligan started out on piano before focusing on arranging. He first took up the alto saxophone before switching to baritone. Gene Krupa and Claude Thornhill both used his arrangements and he also played occasionally in their bands. Mulligan joined Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool nonet in 1948. He wrote and arranged a number of tracks for the Birth Of The Cool sessions.
In 1951 Mulligan first recorded with his own group on Prestige. He also arranged for Stan Kenton. Mulligan formed a pianoless quartet with trumpeter Chet Baker in 1952 and they both became famous. Baker quit in 1953 and Mulligan's next group featured valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer. Trumpeter Art Farmer joined in 1958. Through 1957-60 Mulligan recorded albums with Thelonious Monk, Paul Desmond, Stan Getz, Ben Webster and Johnny Hodges. Mulligan also appeared in the movies I Want to Live and The Subterraneans.
Mulligan formed the Concert Jazz Band in the 1960s , which at times included Brookmeyer, Zoot Sims, Clark Terry and Mel Lewis. He also recorded with Dave Brubeck, Paul Desmond, Stan Getz, Johnny Hodges, and Thelonious Monk. Mulligan continued to lead big and small groups through the 1990s. In the '80s he signed to GRP Records and released two acclaimed and successful albums, Little Big Horn and Re-Birth Of The Cool. In the '90s he led the "Rebirth of the Cool Band" that performed and recorded Miles Davis Nonet classics. Mulligan died January 19, 1996. |
