Guitarist Grant Green is known for laid back non-chordal
single note playing. He was underrated during his life,
but is now seen as one of the greatest guitarists of his
era. Green was born June 6, 1935. He first played professionally
in the late 1950s with Jimmy Forrest, and then Harry Edison
and Lou Donaldson. His recording debut was in 1960 on organist
Brother Jack McDuff's The Honeydripper. Green collaborated
with many organists and was best known for playing in organ/guitar/drum
combos. In the '60s and '70s he also recorded with Stanley
Turrentine, Hank Mobley, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Yusef
Lateef, Elvin Jones, and many others. His drug addiction
side tracked him throughout his career and Green died in
1979. |
