Joy Division Biography and Discography

Joy Division formed as Warsaw in 1977. They would become a leading samples of post-punk music, emphasizing mood over rage and influencing many '80s alternative groups. Bernard Albrecht (guitar) and Peter Hook (bass) originally played together as the Stiff Kittens. They added Ian Curtis (vocals) and Steve Brotherdale (drums) and changer their name to Warsaw. Brotherdale quit the group later in 1977 and was replaced by Stephen Morris. Because of a name conflict with punk band Warsaw Pakt, they changed their name to Joy Division, after the prostitution wings of concentration camps. RCA Records recorded Joy Division in 1978, but when the label added synthesizers Joy Division stopped working on the album and it wasn't released until 1994. Their first actual released was the 1978 EP, An Ideal for Living, which contained the band's original demos. The EP was released on their own Enigma label. 1979's Unknown Pleasures came out on Factory Records and was critically hailed. Joy Division recorded its second album and Were preparing for a tour when Curtis was found dead from hanging on May 18, 1980. "Love Will Tear Us Apart" reached UK #13 and their new album, Closer, received great reviews and reached UK #6. The remaining members of Joy Division decided to stay together, but under the new name of New Order. Albrecht changed his last name to Sumner and became the lead vocalist. The 1981 posthumous Joy Division release Still, a double album of half live and half rare tracks, reached UK #5.
